Joyce Nies graduated from the Indiana University School of
Law in 1997 and holds a B.S. and M.S. from the Indiana
University School of Education. She is a partner at Van Valer
Law Firm where her areas of practice include family, corporate,
and real estate law, small business issues, zoning, commercial
and residential development, and wills.
Before joining Van Valer in 1997, Joyce instructed freshman
composition and writing at Indiana University-Purdue University
at Indianapolis (IUPUI), where she also co-authored the textbook
Research and Argumentation.
Joyce’s concern for community, family, and education is
reflected in her past and present leadership activities. From
1989 to 1997, Joyce served on the Board of Trustees for
Greenwood Community Schools. She is a member the Greater
Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Board of Directors
as vice president. She also serves on the Board of Directors of
Leadership Johnson County and the Greenwood Senior Citizens
Center.
Joyce was the first woman to serve as president of the board of
directors for the Sertoma Club of Greenwood, the third largest
Sertoma club in Indiana. In 2007, she was named District
Sertoman of the Year by the Southern Indiana District of Sertoma,
which encompasses 11 clubs in southern Indiana. Joyce is the
first woman from the Sertoma Club of Greenwood to receive the
district award.
