Kim Van Valer, Of Counsel Attorney,
Mediator & Private Judge |
| |
With an undergraduate education in Art History and
Philosophy, Kim Van Valer combines a unique background with
years of judicial experience to bring thorough legal and life
knowledge to clients. After graduating in 1991 from Indiana
University School of Law, Kim practiced law with her father’s
firm primarily in the areas of real estate, land use and
contracts. Within a year of being admitted to the practice of
law, Kim began receiving requests to serve as a substitute
judge. In 1994, the elected Judges in Johnson County selected
Kim to preside as full time Magistrate to assist them in
handling small claims and misdemeanor criminal cases. Elected
herself in 1996 as Superior Court Judge, Kim presided over a
general jurisdiction docket for 12 years handling a wide range
of cases in both civil and criminal law. Her judicial experience
includes a high volume criminal calendar managed simultaneously
with varied and complex civil litigation. She has conducted
dozens of jury trials and hundreds of bench trials in both civil
and criminal areas.
Kim left the bench at the end of her
second term to focus on alternatives to litigation employing
creative and voluntary problem solving methods. Now, once again
practicing Of Counsel with Van Valer Law Firm, LLP, she conducts
mediation sessions to help litigants arrive at mutually
satisfactory solutions and avoid trial. She continues to serve
the state trial court judges as a Senior Judge presiding in the
elected judge’s absence, and she retains several cases as
Special Judge acquired while serving full time on the bench.
In addition to practicing law and assisting other judges,
Kim provides Mediation, Arbitration and Private Judge services.
She is Registered in the State of Indiana as a Mediator in Civil
Law, Domestic Relations and Foreclosure. Kim’s name can also be
found on the State Court Administration’s list of Registered
Private Judges. A Private Judge has all the authority and
responsibility of an elected judge, but may preside only if
Registered and only if mutually selected by the litigants in an
action.
Kim is a leader in maintaining a high
educational standard in the practice of law in Indiana. She has
served as faculty at conferences for the education of both
attorneys and judges state wide making presentations in areas
from practical tips for judges, litigating injunctions, and
historic preservation law. A 2002 graduate of Leadership Johnson
County, Kim shares her professional expertise in the community
by serving on several local boards and participating in
volunteer legal events to promote settlement of legal disputes
and to assist those who can’t afford legal services.
