After graduating from Franklin College in 2002 and Ohio
Northern University (ONU) Pettit College of Law in 2006, Matthew
Cree headed to Texas to practice law. However, a quick change of
heart led the Franklin, Indiana, native back to his home state.
In 2007, he joined Van Valer Law Firm, where he practices estate
and business planning, real estate and business litigation,
zoning law, and construction law.
Matthew’s accomplishments at ONU helped prepare him for the
challenges he welcomes at the law firm. He served on the mock
trial team of the American Association of Justice (AAJ) and
represented ONU in the Association of Trial Lawyers of America
2004 regional mock trail competition. He also practiced as a
legal intern with the ONU Legal Clinic. In his second year of
law school, he served as an extern in the United States
Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Ohio, Western Division,
where he drafted opinions for the Honorable Richard L. Speer.
Matthew also helped found the ONU Media and Entertainment Law
Society and served as the organization’s treasurer.
In part, Matthew chose to practice law to benefit others. His
community involvements are testament to his nature as a
charitable people-person. At a middle school in Franklin, he
originated mock trial teams and continues to coach and judge
teams annually during their participation in the Indiana High
School Mock Trial Competition, Middle School Division. Matthew
also serves as a committee member of Habitat for Humanity of
Johnson County.
Matthew’s bar memberships include the Indiana and Texas State
Bar Associations, the Indianapolis Bar Association, and the
Johnson County Bar Association.
